Masterclass: Tchaikovsky Waltz
All postsIn 1878, Tchaikovsky expressed his desire “to create a series of little individual pieces just for children, and with an attractive title, like Schumann’s.” Once he set to work, the sketches of all 24 miniatures of his Children’s Album came together quickly, in just a few weeks.
The full set contains so many beloved pieces that have entered the standard literature of intermediate pianists. In recent years, it has become increasingly common to see professional artists featuring the entire set on their concert programs.
The Waltz, Op. 39 No. 9 is included in many anthologies and is a hit with piano students and teachers. It’s a great piece to study the lilting waltz style, expressive accents and elegant inflection.
Enjoy!
