Discovery Series: Joaquín Turina
All postsJoaquín Turina
Although not as well known as his Spanish compatriots Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, and Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a prolific composer of solo piano music and chamber music with piano.
Sacro-monte is a colorful intermediate piece with a few notably advanced elements (so we’re categorizing it as “late intermediate”). Guitarists have understandably enjoyed transcribing this piece for their instrument, as guitar effects abound, along with scales, rhythms, and harmonies that seem to conjure up a slice of Spanish life, perhaps what one might have encountered in the Sacromonte neighborhood of Grenada, known for music and flamenco dancing after dark.
Sacro-monte is a lively piece that’s fun to play–including a frenzied finish that ends fortississimo. See the preview for Fred Karpoff’s new Masterclass below:
Looking forward to viewing.
Very enjoyable and insightful.
